Motivation, good study habits and happy healthy relationships. Well that’s what most of us wish our Year 5, Year 6, Year 7 & Year 8 consisted of. At Kingsgate we understand the research and we know our parents care a great deal about the transition from Primary/Elementary School to Secondary.
While for some children Years 1 to 6 are a breeze, we all know that things start to change as academic challenges increase. Survival in Years 7 and beyond require a different approach. If we want children to succeed, we know they need to develop strong study habits to continue to embrace learning, and to value education in general. Grades, of course, are important. But your child’s attitude about school and learning is potentially even more important. If your child develops strong study habits now (as opposed to coasting through middle school with little or no effort), that could play an important factor in how he or she does in high school, university, and beyond.
Years 7 and 8 are often years of adjustment and difficulty. There is a higher chance of bullying and as students go through the changes of puberty, they’re often confronted with a multitude of issues including their own self-awareness, the constant need to be accepted by their peers, and trying to figure out where they fit in.
We believe that children need to be starting new pathways by now if they truly want to establish good habits going forward. It is a great time to change habits, improve behaviours and, if appropriate, change schools.
Kingsgate’s Year 7 and 8 programme is carefully designed as a transition program to set up students well for IGCSE. We don’t wait until Year 8 and 9 when habits might already be established and less malleable. While our focus is on strong academic habits and foundation skills, we prioritise the soft skills that are so essential helping students settle and develop healthy relationships.
Year 7 and 8 needs to be smooth and it needs to be a launching pad for “pre-IGCSE” and beyond.
Before we celebrate success we need to prepare for success!
